For centuries nomads traded spices, salt, and pearls between the ports of the Persian Gulf and the imperial cities of Jerusalem, Medina, and far beyond. Led by Bedouin guides, we enter Petra—“The Rose City” one of the Seven Wonders of the Modern World. We trek from the secret entrance of Siq al-Barid (Little Petra), following time-worn Nabataean paths through open desert and rocky terrain. Surrounded by mountains and Bedouin camps, we steadily climb, passing through ever-narrowing wadis and weathered cliffscapes. Along the way, we encounter hand-carved monuments, tombs, and temples before reaching the narrow canyon that reveals our first glimpse of the magnificent Treasury, where we exit this remarkable site. After a night in a hotel, the journey continues into Wadi Rum, also known as the Valley of the Moon, where T.E. Lawrence (Lawrence of Arabia) based himself during his Arab campaigns. This vast desert landscape is dominated by massive rock formations, sculpted over milenia into natural arches, gorges, and eerie shapes. We camp with the Bedouin, experiencing unparalleled sunsets and crystal-clear skies—perfect for stargazing.
