Music for Candlemas
For our first concert of 2018, and the latest in our ‘Lacock Scholars in London’ series, we are pleased to present an evening of music based on the festival of Candlemas.
Candlemas dually celebrates the presentation of the baby Jesus to God in the temple at Jerusalem, and the purification of Mary, 40 days after the birth of her son. In this hour-long, seamless performance, we focus on music devoted to Mary by some of the Renaissance greats.
We begin with Byrd's 1605 Mass for the Feast of the Purification of the Blessed Virgin Mary, included in the Gradualia collection of 1605. Known as one of the ‘Marian masses’, it demonstrates Byrd’s devotion to the Catholic liturgy in his characteristically intense, expressive style. The programme will also include John Sheppard’s 'Gaude, gaude, gaude Maria', a large-scale, impressive votive antiphon which will enable us to really explore the acoustics of the space in new ways.
This is our first concert in the beautiful Christ Church in Hampstead. Join us to experience our uniquely integrated, seamless performance in a new setting.
