Morley Medieval


Based at Morley College London, Morley Medieval was founded in 1985, in response to requests from students of medieval art for ways of extending the range of their studies. The Society hosts guest lectures in the Autumn and Spring terms by leading scholars on a wide range of research topics. Cultural visits are arranged during the summer months.

Lectures are held in B13 at Morley College London. Doors open at 6.20pm for a 6.50pm start. These are ticketed at £5 and sold on a first come, first served basis. Tickets are sold by the Ticketing Officer, Malcolm Armstrong: bWFsY29sbTIgISBhcm1zdHJvbmcgfCB5YWhvbyAhIGNvICEgdWs= or: Prospect House, Guithavon Valley, Witham, Essex CM8 1HF.
Guests will be welcome, subject to availability – please check with the Ticketing Officer.
Summer Programme 2018
23rd-27th July: 5 days in Durham, with visits, both local and further afield. This trip is now fully booked, but further details can be obtained from Ann Hignell, YW5uaGlnbmVsbCB8IGJ0aW50ZXJuZXQgISBjb20=.
11th August: Oxfordshire Churches II. Starting at Oxford station at 1045, there will be another day trip led by Richard Halsey. Visiting St Mary's, Uffington, St Margaret of England, Little Faringdon, St Matthew's, Langford and St Mary's, Bampton, with find-your-own lunch in Faringdon. Autumn Programme 2018
Plans are going ahead for our Autumn series of lectures, which, subject to availability of B13, will be on 5 October, 9 November and 14 December. Details to follow.
PLEASE NOTE: there is a fee for membership and our events, and they must be arranged by contacting the relevant officers direct, as mentioned above.

31st March: Dr James Hillson, Emmanuel College, Cambridge What is a Window? Description, Drawing & Architectural Transmision between France & England, 1200-1400
6th May:   Day visit to four churches near Cambridge: Burwell, Swaffham Prior, Swaffham Bulbeck and Bottisham, led by Richard Halsey.
21st-27th June: A Continental tour, based in Medieval Le Mans, to include visits to sites on the Loir and Sarthe; with a focus on the Romanesque and a wealth of wall painting.
22nd August: Day visit to Framlingham & Orford Castles, led by Dr Jeremy Ashbee.
13th October: John Goodall, Country Life English Architecture in the reign of Edward IV                          Preceded by the AGM, at 5.30, also in B13.
10th November: Dr Michael Carter, FSA, Senior Properties Historian, English Heritage Abbots and Aristocrats: Patronage, Art and Architecture at Hailes Abbey
8th December: Dr Andrew Gray Monks at Arms – Puzzles of Monastic Heraldry
2018
19th January: Lloyd de Beer, Ferguson Curator of Medieval Europe, British Museum English Alabaster Sculpture in Context 1350-1603.
16th March: Dr Sally Dormer, V&A Year Course Director & Independent Scholar 'A City Renowned Throughout All Britain': Medieval Durham.
16th May: Nicola Lowe, PhD Candidate, Birkbeck, University of London Monumental Marginalia: Margaret Oddingsell's Stone Prayer Book at Cogges. Please note new date - original event, due on 28th February, was postponed due to the inclement weather conditions.
19th May: Oxfordshire Churches I. Starting at Oxford Station at 1045, a day trip led by Richard Halsey. We shall visit St Peter's, Cassington, St Mary's, North Leigh, St Laurence, Cogges and St Michael's, Stanton Harcourt, with a break for lunch [not included] in Witney. Cost: £39.
