Why are famous scientists like Newton, Darwin and Hawking remembered in Westminster Abbey? Historian Joe Cain explores the significance of commemorating scientists in a sacred space. Hear about how they have shaped public understanding of discovery and what that reveals about shifting values in Britain’s national memory.
This event is part of our monthly Lunchtime Talk series. On the second Wednesday of every month, join us at St Margaret’s Church for an in-depth exploration of part of the Abbey’s history.
Professor Joe Cain is a historian of science at University College London (UCL). He’s an expert on history of Darwinism, dinosaurs, and the history of science in London. Joe has written about the 1925 Scopes Monkey Trial, the history of eugenics, and the famous Crystal Palace Dinosaurs. He’s passionate about public engagement, and he’s a keen amateur photographer.
