Londinium Maximus: Pleasures of the Vomitorium opens the studio’s new Barbican space, transforming it into a site of indulgence inspired by historic Roman feasting, ritual and revelry.London itself was once a Roman town. Two millennia ago the city saw imported fashions, flavours and habits that shocked even Roman onlookers. Roman biographer Suetonius described decadent dishes including “pikes’ livers, pheasants’ brains, peacocks’ brains, the tongues of flamingoes and lamprey roes.” The dining room was a stage for appetite, display and occasionally dramatic purging. Cicero once wrote of Caesar that “Having taken a vomit just before, he ate and drank freely, and was very cheerful.”Our feast draws from these accounts and from the contradictions of Roman culture. The Romans have long been associated with the myth of the vomitorium, wrongly described as a special chamber for diners to vomit so they could continue eating. In fact, the original term referred to the architectural passageways in amphitheatres that spewed crowds into the streets. That tension between myth and reality is the root of our event: a celebration of feasting, storytelling and the strange ideas history leaves behind.Expect dishes rooted in classical foodways, Saturnalia traditions of role reversal and ribald humour, and the gleeful spirit of Roman winter festivities. Guests will find hair ties, toothbrushes and a traditional stylus in the bathrooms for those who choose to take part in a tongue-in-cheek nod to Roman excess. Feasting is the focus, and participation in any wilder habits remains entirely optional.Bompas & Parr’s recent work has explored food, scent and the abject, including a sniffable art exhibition about vomit in St Pancras Church’s Crypt and the studio’s self-published zines Salute to Puke and Salute to Puke 2: Regurgitated Tales.
