Hyakkō: 100+ Makers from Japan gallery tour

Discover the abundance and diversity of Japanese hand-crafted everyday items through a gallery tour led by Hyakkō: 100+ Makers from Japan curator Nagata Takahiro and participating maker Ichikawa Takashi.

The exhibition brings together nearly 2,000 pieces by 123 makers, working in materials including clay, wood, bamboo, glass and metal. The makers in this exhibition are often self-taught rather than belonging to established craft families. They work in small workshops scattered across Japan to master their techniques and discover their own individual style often informed by Japanese tradition.

During the tour, Nagata Takahiro explores the diversity, originality and material aspect of the objects and reveals the curation process behind the exhibition. Ichikawa Takashi, who runs a studio at the foot of Mt Ibuki in Shiga Prefecture, speaks about his works and uncovers what inspires and informs his aesthetic approach.
