So why is Harry Diamond not better known?Harry Diamond was born in Mile End in 1924. He worked for two decades as a scene-shifter in West End theatres before theatre​ photographer Michael Peto encouraged him to take up a camera. His black-and-white analogue​ photography of Soho and Whitechapel, developed from 1968 to the 1990s, reflects an intuitive,​ emotionally charged approach to framing, reflecting the sweet highs and lows of an east ender who lived for jazz. Ronnie Scott took Harry on as a floorman, cleaner, bouncer and doorman at his club. From the floor Harry snapped his jazz idols, including Duke Ellington : “People ask me if I believe in God, right? Well I photographed him didn’t I!".Maria Andrews is a community film maker and videographer born in Stepney in the 1970s. She is in her second year of the PhD Harry Diamond : the archive as a maze of masks.
