Many are hand-painted onto walls, but other examples can be found embedded into the fabric of a building, forged in metal or carved as a panelled relief.The vibrant and ever-changing area of Brick Lane and Spitalfields offers a wonderful cross-section of old advertising that shows us how the area has evolved and transformed throughout the ages, shining a light on the diverse ways people promoted their wares before the inventions of self-adhesive lettering and back-lit perspex.The route takes us past Huguenot houses, the Truman Brewery, Brick Lane's second hand shops and restaurants, around and through market streets and into narrow alleys, to look at more than 20 different signs for a variety of manufacturers, tradesmen and shopkeepers. You will see old ads for products as diverse as milk and millinery, hats and hot dinners, bags and bananas.
