He is a member of multiple national academies of medicine and science , and chairs several global health organisations. Professor Piot has received numerous awards including the Canada Gairdner Global Health Award, the Hideyo Noguchi Africa Research Award, and was named a 2014 TIME Person of the Year. He was made a Baron by the King of Belgium and awarded a UK knighthood.
