- **Event Name**: Dusk at the Dock: bat walk in East London
- **Event Start and End Date**: Sat, 20 Jun, 2026 at 09:00 pm – Tue, 21 Jul, 2026 at 10:30 pm
- **Event Description**: Discover the hidden nocturnal world of East London. Use a bat detector and join us for a chill evening walk in Shadwell and Wapping!About this EventAs the light drops, something extraordinary begins. Bats flicker between council blocks and sweep above the canals. If you know how to listen, the city starts to speak in ultrasound. Many people go for bat walks in parks, but bats are around us even in crowded nighbourhoods. Join us for an evening walk through one of London's most ecologically surprising urban corridors — from the dense housing estates of Shadwell to the waterfront at Wapping. We'll move through council flat estates, pocket parks, a historic churchyard, green spaces and open water, to understand our urban landscape with bats. What we'll be doingBat detectors will be provided, though if you have your own, bring it along. We'll learn how to read bat calls, how to tell species apart by their echolocation signatures, and how bats use urban spaces.Every bat sighting on the walk will contribute to the Sunset Survey, part of the National Bat Monitoring Programme (NBMP) — so your evening out is also citizen science. What to expectThis is a relaxed, curious walk. You don't need to be an expert — just willing to slow down and pay attention.Wear layers and comfortable shoes. Bring a torch if you have one.Special walk - 17 June, Bethnal Green Field SurveyA NBMP field survey - expect a more rigid way of survey bats. We will meet at 21:15 a different spot than the usual one: https://maps.app.goo.gl/nigGg6ypDp1j2gtm6 near Weavers Field, south of the overground trailway trackThe walk will be about 2 hours and finish near the starting pointVictoria Park walk - 16 JuneA casual walk around the Vicky park as a comparison of park bat situation with the more urbanised places.
