Discovering Covent Garden and the Strand: An Illustrated Talk
Join us for a spellbinding journey from medieval mayhem to modern marvels

About this Event

Join us for a spellbinding journey as we explore the bustling streets of the Strand and the character-filled corners of Covent Garden, (once the convent gardens of Westminster Abbey in the Middle Ages) you’ll uncover tales both grand and grisly. Discover how the site of a fiery riot during the Peasants’ Revolt transformed into one of London’s most prestigious hotels. Dive into the intriguing — and at times shadowy — history of Covent Garden. Marvel at the story of human remains found in Benjamin Franklin’s London residence and the tragic end of Chunee the elephant, once a star attraction.

Our guide on this historical adventure is Peter Whitehead, a master storyteller who brings the past vividly to life. With over 40 years in the Civil Service and now a dedicated volunteer at cultural treasures like the Charles Dickens Museum, The Royal Academy, and The Guards Museum, Peter promises an unforgettable experience.

A Short History of Covent Garden and the Strand

Medieval OriginsCovent Garden began as the convent garden of Westminster Abbey, supplying food for monks. The Strand, from the Old English for "shore," was the key route connecting the City of London to Westminster and soon became lined with the grand riverside homes of bishops and nobles.

17th Century: Planning and PrestigeAfter the Dissolution of the Monasteries, Covent Garden was developed by the Earl of Bedford. Inigo Jones designed the first formal square in London here, inspired by Italian piazzas. The Strand remained a high-status area, home to mansions like Somerset House.

18th–19th Century: Market and TheatresCovent Garden evolved into a bustling market and entertainment district, famous for produce, performers, and the Theatre Royal. The Strand became a hub of printing, journalism, and theatre, often visited by writers like Charles Dickens.

20th Century to TodayThe market moved in 1974, and Covent Garden became a lively cultural and shopping destination. The Strand still connects key parts of London and mixes historic landmarks with modern life.
