Concert - Following the river
In this lunchtime concert I will be performing several pieces from mt CD Following the River. The programme will be an epic journey into a fantasy world of gripping stories and energetic dances. Bartok claimed that folk music had become his ‘musical mother tongue’. His exploration of Eastern European folk heritage resulted in unique masterpieces, such as the 6 Dances in Bulgarian Rhythm. These infectious peasant rhythms set to Bartok’s original tunes give this music its unique enthralling flavour. They find echo in Constantinescu’s Cântec, a whirlwind of a piece which wears its heart on its sleeve. The slowly lilting theme is a song that tells about a woman’s grief, waiting for her long-departed husband. The variations take the melody to a heroic climax, when the music bears a feeling of redemption. The ensuing Toccata, whose inspiration is located in the south-eastern Romanian region of Dobrogea, is an incisive rustic dance with an irregular pattern. Liszt’s 5th Hungarian Rhapsody is a Romantic transformation of a mournful Hungarian song, and his Mephisto-Waltz unfolds an extraordinary narrative involving the Devil, who tries (and succeeds) to capture two lovers into a spellbinding dance, making them waltz away into oblivion. The CD, released on 5th January 2018 (Acousence Classics, ACO-CD 13317) will be on sale at the concert.
