- **Event Description**: A Renewed Feminist PraxisAbout this EventProfessor Sarah M. Hall, Professor of Human Geography at the University of Manchester, will give the Department of Geography’s annual David M. Smith Lecture (abstract to follow). Professor Hall is a feminist economic geographer whose research sits within the broad field of geographical feminist political economy, focusing on how socio-economic inequalities are shaped by relationships, lived experience, and social difference. Her research interests and contributions span three key areas: everyday life and economic change; social reproduction, care and ethics; and feminist methods and praxis.Professor Hall joined the University of Manchester in October 2012 as a Hallsworth Research Fellow in Political Economy. In September 2015, she took up the position of Lecturer in Human Geography, and was subsequently promoted to Senior Lecturer in 2018, Reader in 2020, and Professor in 2022. She is a member of the Morgan Centre for Research into Everyday Lives and the Manchester Urban Institute, where she previously co-chaired the Urban Justice, Gender and Social Difference Feminist Collective. From 2019 to 2020, she held an ISRF Political Economy Research Fellowship on the theme of reproduction and austerity. In February 2021, Professor Hall began a UKRI Future Leaders Fellowship (valued at over £2.2 million) on the theme of Austerity and Altered Lifecourses. This 8+ year project spans the UK, Spain, Italy, Ireland, and the Netherlands. Drawing on feminist-relational theories, innovative oral histories and futures-oriented methods, and creative approaches to public engagement, the project explores how young people’s lives and futures have been shaped—and continue to be shaped—by austerity. A central aim of the research is to reframe socio-economic policies at local, regional, and national scales, promoting empowering and participatory approaches that better future-proof policy for young people. Professor Hall is currently engaged in co-creating stories, spaces, and solidarities across this field, working alongside community and creative practitioners, including community researchers and research organisations such as Inspire Women, to collectively imagine and develop new methods, futures, and relationships.Professor Hall lives in Liverpool with her partner and her dog, Max. She moved to the North West when she began university and is originally from Barnsley in South Yorkshire. Coming from a working-class background, she is a committed and vocal advocate for others from marginalised backgrounds who are seeking to study and pursue research careers within universities.
