There was no state funeral, no official period of German mourning and, thanks to the hasty cremation of his remains, no visible display of his body. These factors created a vacuum ripe for survival myths to flourish, and establishing conclusive proof of Hitler’s death became a decades-long investigative process for Allied intelligence agencies. But this search for evidence is only part of Hitler’s death story.At this launch event, Caroline Sharples will highlight some of the unusual ways in which ordinary people around the globe have engaged with the idea of Hitler’s death – and discuss the Allied fears regarding a potential Hitler shrine or martyrdom legend that affected policymaking during the postwar occupation of Germany.About the speakerCaroline Sharples is Senior Lecturer in History at the University of Roehampton with research interests focussed on the aftermath of National Socialism. She is the author of West Germans and the Nazi Legacy (Routledge, 2012) and Postwar Germany and the Holocaust (Bloomsbury, 2015), and the co-editor (with Olaf Jensen) of Britain and the Holocaust: Remembering and Representing War and Genocide (Palgrave Macmillan, 2013).
