Based on survivor memoirs, personal interviews, surviving garments and rare illustrations, it examines the profound importance of clothing to prisoners’ physical and emotional survival.Moving beyond the familiar image of the striped concentration camp uniform, Dress in Auschwitz reveals the complex and often overlooked realities of clothing in Auschwitz, demonstrating how garments became essential to daily life, personal identity and resilience in an environment designed to strip individuals of their humanity.The evening will feature a presentation by the author, followed by a panel discussion with distinguished scholars and an audience Q&A. The talk will conclude with a reception.The event will also feature a special exhibition of clothing materials and textiles held in the Library’s collections, offering a rare opportunity to see such objects up close.About the AuthorDr Sofia Pantouvaki is Professor of Costume Design for Theatre and Film at Aalto University. An award-winning performance designer and scholar, she has worked internationally for more than thirty years in theatre, opera, film and dance, and has curated many exhibitions, and international artistic and research projects. She is the Chair of Critical Costume, a founding Editor of the journal Studies in Costume and Performance, and lead editor, with Peter McNeil, of Performance Costume: New Perspectives and Methods (Bloomsbury, 2021).Her research focuses on costume theory and practice, particularly in relation to technology, ecology, and critical thinking, as well as clothing in World War Two concentration camps. Her monograph Dress in Auschwitz: Clothing and Survival in the Holocaust (Bloomsbury, 2026) exemplifies her ongoing engagement with critical dress history in relation to human experience.About the speakersDr Aileen Ribeiro read History at King’s College London, followed by postgraduate study at the Courtauld Institute of Art, where she received her MA (1971) and PhD (1975). She was Head of the History of Dress Section at the Courtauld Institute from 1975 to 2009 and was appointed Professor in the History of Art at the University of London in 2000; she is now Professor Emeritus. She has published numerous books and articles on the history of dress, has acted as costume consultant and contributor to many major exhibitions, and has lectured widely in Great Britain, Europe, and North America.Dr Lisa Peschel is a Professor of Theatre in the School of Arts and Creative Technologies at the University of York, England. Her articles on theatrical performance in the Theresienstadt ghetto, based on preserved scripts and survivor testimony, have appeared in theatre- and Holocaust-related journals in the US and the UK and in Czech, German and Israeli publications. Her edited volume based on two reconstructions of a fragmentary script from Theresienstadt, A Holocaust Cabaret: Re-making Theatre from a Jewish Ghetto, was published in autumn 2023.Dr Flavia Loscialpo is Senior Lecturer and Cultural Studies Course Leader at London College of Fashion, University of the Arts London. Her research has been translated in several languages, and has explored identity politics and otherness, racial capitalism, forced labour and violence in fashion. Her current work explores the interconnectedness of social, racial and environmental justice in fashion, and she regularly collaborates with human rights activists and platforms such as Fashion Revolution.
