Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) is due to be introduced for Nationally Significant Infrastructure Projects (NSIPs) in England from May 2026. This will require NSIPs to deliver and demonstrate a minimum 10% net increase in biodiversity post-development which, for such vast and complex projects, will present unique challenges to ensure successful compliance.
Biodiversity is already a key consideration for NSIPs – with Preliminary Environmental Information Reports (PEIRs) and Environmental Impact Assessments (EIAs) being key features of the Development Consent Order (DCO) process – but mandatory BNG is likely to require a significant shift in how and when biodiversity considerations are made to prevent potentially costly delays during the planning phase, so stakeholders should start thinking about BNG approaches now.
This BNG Summit for NSIPs will give delegates the opportunity to hear from renowned industry experts, including specialists already providing strategic biodiversity solutions for significant projects alongside key representatives from notable NSIPs and leading consultancies.
Our expert speakers will explore all the major challenges likely to arise from BNG for NSIPs, discuss early strategies for effective delivery, and consider potential avenues for NSIPs to capitalise on the new policy.

Who this event is for
Welcoming delegates from across the NSIP sector – this summit is for developers, consultants, planners, land promoters, and government stakeholders involved in the delivery of nationally significant energy, transport, water, waste, and wastewater projects in England.
About BNG
Since its introduction for major development in 2024, BNG has garnered global recognition as an environmental policy blueprint. With advanced preparation and sufficient guidance – BNG now has the potential to succeed on an even greater scale where NSIPs will play a primary role in delivering for nature and people.
