Autistic as F*CK

Award-winning neurodivergent performance company @theatre_asylum are creating Autistic as F*ck, a new show examining performativity and creativity in autism. The autistic experience of masking is one of constantly performing in a world of unclear, inconsistent conventions. We never see autism on stages or screens except filtered through a neurotypical lens.

Supported by Arts Council England, Oxford Playhouse and Battersea Arts Centre, ASYLUM are developing a performance piece about passing, conformity and unknowability in the autistic experience. The piece is directed by award-winning director and Oxford University Interdisciplinary Fellow Stephen Bailey (who is autistic!).

Partnering with Change, Act! ASYLUM are offering two free workshops to share ideas and processes from the show and to hear from a range of neurodivergent people to inform the politics and making of the show.

We hope this event will give an outlet for creative expression free from judgement. Attendees may participate and observe as suits them.

August 5th - 2-4pm: Writing and Discussion. This session will involve discussion of autistic representation, an opportunity to read and feed back on some short extracts from the show, and some guided writing tasks.

August 12th - 2-4pm: Improv and Physical Action: This session will involve discussion of autistic representation and a sharing of some drama techniques and physical games used to devise the show.
