- **Event Description**: Excavations at the site of Mersa/Wadi Gawasis, on Egypt’s Red Sea coast have revealed evidence of a Middle Kingdom harbour used for seafaring expeditions to Punt, including timbers and rigging from ancient ships, and texts on stelae and ostraca relating to these expeditions. Finds also included potsherds from regions in the southern Red Sea where Punt was located as well as materials originating in Punt, such as ebony and obsidian.

Kathryn Bard is Professor emerita of Archaeology and Classical Studies at Boston University. She has co-directed excavations at Mersa/Wadi Gawasis with the late Professor Rodolfo Fattovich, and at Aksum, Ethiopia. Among Bard’s publications is: An Introduction to the Archaeology of Ancient Egypt (Wiley, 2015).
