- **Event Description**: Skylin underwent yet another unexpected brain surgery on May 15, 2026. She was admitted to the hospital for another craniectomy due to signs of infection underneath her craniotomy incision from April's AVM resection surgery. Her MRI of her brain showed enhancement and concern for infection in the subgaleal and epidural space with likely some cerebritis (inflammation of brain). It was best to take her for surgery for washout and removal of the bone flap that next morning. In 3 months time, Skylin will need another cranioplasty surgery to place a titanium plate where they removed the small bone flap (piece of skull) due to inflammation from the infection and giving the brain time to heal again. The cultures came back showing a wimpy version of staph. The infectious disease doctor was out on maternity leave, so they had to consult CHOP for treatment options. They didn't see the need for a PICC line with just being a low-grade staph infection and as she was already on strong IV antibiotics for 3 days while waiting for the culture results. Skylin's neurosurgeon wanted to do more stronger antibiotics and CHOP would not agree. Skylin was placed on oral antibiotics for 14 days and on day 11 a fluid filled bubble started to appear on her incision in a different spot than before. Within a few days it was looking red and angry. Once it started draining, he said get there right away and admitted her on June 3rd, 2026 until they could do testing to determine what was going on. He doesn't believe she's on strong enough antibiotics, but CHOP refuses to match his concerns and recommendations to give her something stronger AGAIN. I voiced my concerns loudly as we believe she needs more too even if it'd be a PICC line. This is too close to her brain to play games! She does not need another surgery again or any new infection to reach her brain if we can prevent it! So for now, we're continuing another 7 day cycle of the same antibiotic and praying for the best outcome. I do not see it being healed at the end of this one. We will be back up to Danville before she finishes this cycle to reassess.

Back in July 2025, Skylin's need for emergency brain surgery resulted in left-sided paralysis to where she couldn't sit, stand, crawl, walk, eat, drink, or talk. With the help of extensive rehabilitation she's where she is today. Each brain surgery she goes through comes with the risks of more lost function all over again. Read further down for her full story.

?Skylin's Brain Journey:
Skylin was rushed to the emergency room and diagnosed with a large right parietal intra-parenchymal hemorrhage in July 2025. She presented with a midline shift right -> left causing brain herniation and compression. She was life flighted to Geisinger Medical Center where her head CT disclosed suspected ruptured right parietal arteriovenous malformation (AVM). This is an abnormal cluster of blood vessels. She was transferred emergently to the hybrid operating room for right decompressive hemicraniectomy with hematoma evacuation. In more simple terms, a life-saving neurosurgical procedure where a large portion of the skull is removed (bone flap) to alleviate severe intracranial pressure. After leaving the hospital Skylin went straight to inpatient rehabilitation for the next 4-6 weeks as the brain bleed caused Skylin left-sided paralysis. She's needed extensive therapy (ST, OT, & PT) to re-learn how to talk, drink, eat, sit up, crawl, walk, and use all her left-sided extremities. She continued living the next 3 months wearing a helmet while her brain healed without her bone flap.
This family's lives were turned upside down and since Skylin's family's world has revolved around survival, treatment, recovery, all while continuing to care for her younger sister and themselves. Skylin's mother was unable to work for 4 plus months while being with Skylin through the biggest part of her recovery at the inpatient rehabilitation hospital. Skylin's father had to cut back his hours at work to care for their youngest daughter while they were at the inpatient rehabilitation hospital as it was 3 hours away from home. Once they were home and Skylin was cleared for school, her mother went to school with her until they found an aide so she could continue her education in person. Once Skylin was home they had to complete home renovations and fill their home with medical equipment as Skylin's way of everyday living was changed.
Skylin underwent her 2nd brain surgery called a cranioplasty in October 2025 to repair her bone flap with titanium plates and screws. In February 2026, Skylin underwent a follow up cerebral angiogram for the suspected arteriovenous malformation (AVM) where the results confirmed she indeed had one. In March 2026, we consulted with the surgeon to discuss her treatment options and surgery was the best option for her. Skylin underwent her 3rd brain surgery called a craniotomy for her AVM resection to removed what caused her brain hemorrhage. On May 15, 2026 was just her 4th brain surgery which was a cranioplasty to washout the infection and the removal of the infected bone flap and this is where we are today! Three months down the road will be her 5th brain surgery to implant a titanium plate over the hole in her skull to protect her brain.
