The cardboard boat races to benefit Special Olympics Illinois - Region H will start at 1pm. We will have food from the It's All Good food truck, drinks from Just the Basics mobile bar, Cornett Shaved Ice and great music with Dave Littrell! Start making your cardboard boat now, or just come out as a spectator to enjoy food, drinks, music and fun.What is a Cardboard Boat Regatta?The Cardboard Boat Regatta challenges participants from all over Central Illinois to design, build and navigate boats made entirely of corrugated cardboard. The crafty cardboard creations then sail (or sink) as they compete for a variety of awards including "best design", "fastest boat" and "fastest sinker". See below for rules and boat design info! Or, check out this link to see photos of last year's Cardboard Boat Regatta.Who can participate? Registration is open to all amateur boat builders - young and old! Register crews in categories of 14 and under or 15 and over. Registered teams can check in starting at Noon and the Regatta will begin at 1pm. Students grades K-12th and non-profit organizations are NOT required to raise the $50 entry fee per boat. However, we encourage you to collect donations from friends, family and local businesses to help you win the People's Choice Award! Any funds raised for your boat will go to Special Olympics Illinois. The boat that raises the most donations will win the People's Choice Award!Teams & Racing FormatAll Persons in boat must where a PFD (Personal Flotation Device). We will have limited Lifejackets on site for use please bring your own if possible.Registration/Check in will start at Noon with the first race at approximately at 1pm.Swimming and/or pulling the boat will result in disqualification.Judges will divide entrants into heats, depending on the number of vessels.Winners of heats will race in the finals.Awards will be presented for Fastest Boat, Best Design, and Fastest Sinker for both age groups.Boat Design & ConstructionBoats must be made ONLY of cardboard, glue, paint and tape. No liners, plastic, PVC, wood, or tarps (paddles can be wood).Boats will be inspected by judges, modifications will be allowed up until race time.Boats must be completely enclosed, or permit the crew to remain fully on top of the vessel (no legs & feet can be used to propel your boat). No surfboard/paddleboard styles.Boats must be propelled by the use of arms or paddles. NO motors, or automated propulsion devices.The boat’s passengers area MUST NOT be enclosed above the occupant’s shoulders, so not to interfere with escape should the vessel begin to sink.Boat design is left to the builder’s imagination (Pirate Ship, Navy Ship, Pontoon, Vikings).We can't wait to see you at the 2026 Special Olympics Illinois Cardboard Boat Regatta at Sheedy Shores!
