Short bio on Tom McManus:
Tom is an upper level competitor/trainer/instructor offering classical training for any breed. and instruction with sound techniques, patience and clarity . He does not teach only
what to do, but why, when and how. He focuses on the little things that make the entire presentation better. You will feel secure, relaxed and know exactly what to do when you are practicing on your own and horses will learn each aid consistently and become dependable partners to work with.
Tom does not believe that you can put a rider and their horse into a mold and treat them all the same way. His emphasis is placed on the clear communication and understanding between horse and rider, which comes from a secure and correct position.
Tom is very thorough in his teaching and believes that you need to have a
good position and a correct understanding of the aids to ride your horse in the proper frame. If you can do that, then the movements come easily. He offers training of horse and rider through the levels to Grand Prix. He specializes in helping you to achieve your goals whether starting your and your horse's show career, or advancing your and your horse's skills to the Advanced levels. Tom has prepared several of his students/riders to become professional trainers and
instructors.
Tom is available for private and semi-private lessons. He believes that
establishing a good foundation is essential to creating the best riders and that there are no quick fixes. When riders come to him with problems, he will try to find out the reason why the problems are taking place; he treats the origin rather than just the symptom.
Tom started working with Standardbred race horses at the age of 12, obtained an assistant trainers license at 16. Traveled the US for the standardbred grand tour races. He studied dressage with Joan Hunt from England. Later, he accepted a position with Royal Lipizzaner Stallion show, where he started as production rider and within a year worked up to single starring act and the trainer of the Airs above the ground. He was part of 7 to 10 shows a week for 50 weeks a year, traveling in all the states, Canada, Mexico, Brazil and Argentina. After 2.5 years, he accepted a position as trainer at Shilo Arabians in Indiana. We competed at regional and national shows. Then moved back to Pittsburgh and ran Cranmar Arabians, again winning on a national level. He then started importing Straight Egyptian Horses from Cairo to Europe and USA. He has over 50 years of solid horsemanship established in classical dressage. He is now in the Birmingham, Alabama area and continues his vocation of horsemanship with special emphasis on Arabian horses. Some but not all of the wonderful horseman he has been lucky to work with and learn from are Ernst Herrmann, Yoshi Kinoshita, Brian Ross, Nuno Olivera and Donita Konyot, just to name a few.
