Airmens Monument Circular. Remembrance Day 2025
Start time: 10:00 for a 10:15 start
Meet point: Worlds End car park SJ2320848382 or W3W //////barbarian.chuck.harp
This is a walk in the beautiful Denbighshire hills on Remembrance Day to honour those who gave their lives in service of their country. Starting at Worlds End near Llangollen, the walk will ascend up to the Denbighshirfe Moors to the Airmens Monument. The area is significant in that during the WW2 era, there were no fewer than 15 crashes of military aircraft here, mostly training flights. I will try and share some of the history to anyone interested on the day.
I'm aiming to reach the Monument just before 11, so the start time will be 10am for a 10:15 start. Once there, we will hold a minutes silence, and leave a Poppy cross at the site, before continiuing the walk. There are two options, one a 10 miler, and a shorter 7 miler, which we do can be decided on the morning taking into account weather and the shorter daylight hours.
Both routes take good paths across the moor, but this can be a boggy area in winter, so good, sturdy, waterproof boots are adviseable. Both routes return to the car park via the Offas Dyke footpath below the cliifs popular with climbers in the summer months. Once done, we can head into Llangollen for a well earned pint!
Please remember its now winter, it is likely to be both wet and cold, and we will be standing around at the monument for around 15 minutes, so waterproofs and warm layers are absolutely essential. A head torch is advisable, purely as a just in case measure.
This is the first of a series of walks I aim to do to many of the crash sites in North Wales, something I have been wanting to do for some years. I hope some of you will join me on what should be a both enjoyable and poignant walk.
Also check out other Workshops in Llangollen.
