The ‘Museum of Edible Earth‘ is a transdisciplinary project that houses a global collection of edible soils and invites visitors to reflect on our relationship with the environment. The project raises questions about how traditions of eating soil differ between cultures, where edible soil comes from, what its potential benefits and dangers are, and how its material properties affect its taste. The museum’s mission is to collect as many edible soils as possible from different parts of the world and to study the diversity of their historical and cultural meanings.

Through interdisciplinary partnerships, workshops, and collaborations, our understanding of soil consumption—geophagy, an ancient global practice with nutritional, cultural, and medicinal reasons—is being redefined. In addition to descriptions and historical background, the edible soil archive also includes visitors’ tastes and experiences. The collection currently contains more than 600 samples from 44 countries, obtained from the field, purchased, or received as gifts.

‘Compost as Superfood‘ is a more recent project in which composted food creates artificial soil that can be consumed in the same way as other edible soils. Within this project, masharu encourages discussion about the safety of consuming naturally processed organic materials and the complexity of cultural understanding, spatial and environmental awareness, and personal preferences associated with this. Activities based on biodesign and food design explore the possibilities of producing edible soil with controlled ingredients and free of pollutants such as microplastics, heavy metals, and pesticides.

Natural soil, such as that found in deciduous forests, bears traces of thousands of years of species interaction and is formed through long-term decomposition influenced by insects, earthworms, and microorganisms. Artificially created soil, on the other hand, has a different composition and may be safer for consumption. Compost, rich in fiber, potassium, and nitrogen, is produced by the decomposition of food with the help of other organisms and is commonly used as fertilizer. Participating in composting promotes a connection with nature, interspecies cooperation, and the creation of soil as a potential source of food.
