Ekosistemska nestabilnost in klimatske spremembe pred človeško družbo postavljajo izzive, na katere težko najdemo rešitve, saj razmišljanje o vzrokih nujno zahteva spremembo ekonomskega produkcijskega sistema, skozi katerega je osmišljena sodobna industrializirana družba. Človek – oziroma antropocentrizem, ki ga je humanistična doksa postavila kot merilo vsega – za svoj obstoj instrumentalizira vsa nečloveška živa bitja in materialne resurse planeta, ki očitno popušča pod vsestranskim izčrpavanjem. Preživetje skoraj desetih milijard ljudi na eni strani in razpadanje ekološkega ravnovesja na drugi pred nas postavlja vprašanja, ki že sama po sebi zvenijo distopično ter večino ljudi plašijo z izgubo lagodja in ugodnosti potrošniškega načina življenja. Zaradi prenaseljenosti predindustrijski načini proizvodnje ne ponujajo rešitev, zato se kot ključno postavlja vprašanje tehnološke optimizacije, ki nujno implicira redefinicijo rabe energetskih in materialnih virov.

Pionirska raziskovanja bioinformatike so nas zgodaj pripeljala do različnih fizioloških vzorcev in sistemskih povezav med živimi bitji. Skozi področja kvantne biologije in biokomputacije pa se vse bolj približujemo tehnologijam, ki omogočajo vzpostavljanje simbiotičnih razmerij. Ta razmerja odpirajo možnosti za izmenjavo informacij, sobivanje in koevolucijo onkraj enostransko izkoriščevalskih in ekstraktivističnih procesov. Pri tem nas ne zanima le, kako nadomestiti energijsko potratno komputacijo na silicijskih čipih, temveč predvsem, kako razumeti in opolnomočiti ne-človeška živa bitja kot epistemološki korpus, s pomočjo katerega lahko govorimo o oblikah mišljenja. To mišljenje je sposobno ontološkega premika – od kartezijanskega racionalizma k hibridni inteligenci, ki je podobno kot grški pojem Nous, odprta za razumevanje in skuša opisati naravne in kozmične dimenzije umevanja.

V umetniških delih, kjer se poetika ustvarja skozi vzajemno interkognicijo med človekom in nečloveškimi bitji, se praviloma artikulirajo vzročno-posledične interakcije. Te razkrivajo sistemske odzive in možnost dialogiziranja med živalmi, rastlinami, mikroorganizmi in človekom. S pomočjo različnih senzorjev, ki razširjajo polje človeškega zaznavanja, umetniška dela pred nami odstirajo interaktivnost organizmov in možnosti simbiotičnih povezav, ki s svojo kavzalnostjo nakazujejo oblike ne-človeških kognicij. Vzorci, ki se prikazujejo iz ogromnih količin senzorskih podatkov, se v umetniških delih kažejo kot epistemi, skozi katere lahko mislimo umevanje in sobivanje z ne-človeškimi drugimi. Hibridna inteligenca, omogočena skozi biokomputacijo, odpira priložnosti za iskanje odgovorov o tipu civilizacije, ki svojega razvoja ne gradi na eksponentni rabi energije, temveč se obrača k energetskim virom in komputacijskim procesom, ki so ves čas že z nami.

Globalni vzorci simbioze med rastlinami in glivami

Večina rastlinskih korenin tvori tesno povezavo z glivami, ki rastlinam zagotavljajo hranila v zameno za ogljik. Vendar pa naše razumevanje globalnih ekosistemov v veliki meri temelji na nadzemnem življenju, zaradi česar je življenje v prsti v veliki meri neraziskano. Za obravnavo te teme sem uporabil različne orodje, vključno z robotiko, sekvenciranjem DNK in strojnim učenjem, da sem kartiral globalno razporeditev gliv v prsti. To delo pomaga zagotoviti vpogled v globino prsti, da bi preučil simbiozo med rastlinami in glivami.

Živi računalniki

Cilj, ki ga želimo doseči, je razvoj prvega živega procesorja v snovanju  katerega je namen uporabiti žive nevrone namesto tranzistorjev. Na predavanju bo opisan celoten proces, ki ga uporabljamo, od celic do algoritmov, ki interagirajo z živimi možganskimi organoidi. Predstavljene bodo tudi različne strategije, ki jih preizkušamo, da bi dosegli naš naslednji cilj, ki je obvladanje usposabljanja možganskih organoidov in njihovo povezovanje z usposabljanjem, ki se že izvaja z umetnimi nevronskimi mrežami.

Za ta namen smo zasnovali sistem, ki omogoča enostavno izvajanje in vitro elektrofizioloških in nevromodulatornih poskusov. Med operacijami, ki jih je mogoče izvajati, so stimulacije s tokom, odčitavanje akcijskih potencialov, vizualizacija električne aktivnosti v realnem času, vizualizacija živčnega tkiva v realnem času, spremljanje okolja v realnem času, nadzor mikrofluidike, nadzor UV-svetlobe za molekularno razpiranje in samodejno ustvarjanje grafičnih prikazov rezultatov. Poleg tega so vse te operacije napisane v Pythonu, kar omogoča avtomatizacijo eksperimentov, izvedbo izčrpnih pregledov ali optimizacijo vseh eksperimentalnih parametrov na podlagi gradienta, hkrati pa se vodi podrobni dnevnik o tem, kar je bilo testirano, in celo omogoča agentom velikega jezikovnega modela, da izvajajo svoje lastne eksperimente.

Ecosystem instability and climate change present challenges to human society that are difficult to solve, since thinking about the causes urgently demands a shift in the economic production system that gives meaning to modern industrialized society.The human being – or rather anthropocentrism, which humanistic doxa has established as the measure of all things – instrumentalizes all non-human living beings and the material resources of the planet for its own survival, a planet that is clearly giving way under the strain of such exhaustive exploitation. The survival of nearly ten billion people on one hand and the disintegration of ecological balance on the other raise questions that in themselves already sound dystopian and frighten most people with the prospect of losing the comforts and privileges of consumerist life. Due to overpopulation, pre-industrial modes of production offer no solutions; thus, the crucial question becomes one of technological optimization, which necessarily implies a redefinition of the use of energetic and material resources.

Pioneering research in bioinformatics early on led us to various physiological patterns and systemic connections among living beings. Through the fields of quantum biology and biocomputation we are increasingly approaching technologies that make possible the establishment of symbiotic relations. These relations open up the potential for exchange of information, cohabitation, and coevolution beyond one-sidedly exploitative and extractivist processes. Here, our concern is not only how to replace energy-intensive computation on silicon chips, but above all how to understand and empower non-human living beings as an epistemological corpus through which it becomes possible to speak of forms of thinking. Such thinking is capable of an ontological shift – from Cartesian rationalism toward hybrid intelligence, which, similar to the Greek notion of Nous, remains open to understanding and strives to describe the cosmic dimensions of comprehension.

In artistic works where poetics emerges through reciprocal intercognition between humans and non-human beings, causal interactions are typically articulated. These interactions reveal systemic responses and open the possibility of dialogizing between animal and plant, or between microorganisms and humans. Through the use of various sensors that extend the field of human perception, artistic works before us disclose the interactivity of organisms and the potential for symbiotic connections, which through their causality point to forms of non-human cognitions. The patterns that emerge from vast amounts of sensory data appear in artistic works as epistemes through which we can think our cohabitation with non-human others. Hybrid intelligence, enabled through biocomputation, creates opportunities for searching for answers about a type of civilization that does not build its development on the exponential use of energy but instead turns toward energetic sources and computational processes that have been with us all along.

Global patterns of plant-fungal symbiosis

Most plant roots form intimate associations with fungi, which provide the plant nutrients in exchange for carbon. Yet, our understanding of global ecosystems is largely based on aboveground life, leaving soil life largely unexplored. To address I used a varieties of tools including robotics, DNA sequencing, and machine-learning to map the global distribution of soil fungi. This works helps provide a periscope into soils to examine play-fungal symbiosis.

Living computers

We are working on designing the first living processor. The goals is to use living neurons instead of transistors. I describe the whole process we use, starting from cells and ending with algorithms interacting with living brain organoids. I also present the various strategies which are tested in order to reach our next goal which is to master training of the brain organoids, and put them in relation with training strategies already performed with artificial neural networks.

For this we designed a system that enables to perform easily in-vitro electrophysiological and neuromodulators experiments. The operations that can be performed include current stimulations, action potential readings, real-time visualization of electrical activity, real-time imaging of nervous tissue, real-time monitoring of environment, control of micro-fluidics, control of UV light for molecular uncaging and automatic generation of graphical representations of results. Moreover, all those operations are scripted in Python, which enables to automate experiments, perform exhaustive screenings or gradient-based optimization of any experimental parameters while keeping a detailed log of what was tested, and even give power to LLM agents to perform their own experiments.
