The Beast of Our Time, a 28-minute, award-winning documentary produced by Save the Yellowstone Grizzly, is an unflinching inquiry into the relationship between climate change and grizzly bears. The film, directed by Maaike Middleton, is narrated by Academy Award-winning actor Jeff Bridges and scored by pianist Bill Payne of Little Feat. A partnership between the Depot and Elk River Arts & Lectures brings a screening of the film on June 13th at 6pm that will be followed by a panel discussion by Middleton, Sue Consolo-Murphy and Doug Peacock, moderated by Marc Beaudin.
Maaike Middleton is the director of two films produced by Save the Yellowstone Grizzly: The Beast of Our Time: Grizzly Bears and Climate Change and Return of the Grizzly. She was born in The Netherlands and grew up in Montana. She has traveled the globe filming wildlife from pumas in Patagonia, the elusive Amur tiger in the Russian Far East and grizzlies in her backyard. Maaike is passionate about telling stories that make a difference and address issues that impact us all. When she is not setting camera traps to capture animal behavior, she is watching film and helping with the section process for the Wildlife Film Festival Rotterdam. She has worked on projects for Smithsonian, Nat Geo, Netflix, BBC, PBS and Arte.
Sue Consolo-Murphy is the author of The Bears of Grand Teton: A Natural and Cultural History. In 2019, she retired from Grand Teton National Park/John D. Rockefeller, Jr. Memorial Parkway where she served as Chief of Science and Resource Management. In her 40-year National Park Service (NPS) career, she was cultural resources chief, editor of Yellowstone Science, a resource biologist and seasonal interpreter at Yellowstone National Park and also worked at several other national parks, historic sites and monuments. Sue was the 2013 recipient of the NPS Director’s Award for Excellence in Natural Resource Management and a 2008 honoree of the Interagency Grizzly Bear Committee for significant contributions to grizzly bear recovery.
Doug Peacock is the author of Was It Worth It?: A Wilderness Warrior’s Long Trail Home, Grizzly Years: In Search of the American Wilderness, Walking It Off: A Veteran’s Chronicle of War and Wilderness and other books recounting his life-long passion for—and battles to defend—the world’s wildest spaces. A Green Beret medic during two tours in Vietnam and the real-life model for Edward Abbey's George Washington Hayduke in The Monkey Wrench Gang, Peacock has published widely on wilderness issues: from grizzly bears to buffalo, from the Sierra Madres of the Sonoran Desert to the fjords of British Columbia, from the tigers of Siberia to the blue sheep of Nepal. He is a co-founder of Round River Conservation Studies, which has contributed to the preservation of 20 million acres of wilderness, and of Save the Yellowstone Grizzly, which works to protect and advocate for the bears of the lower 48 states.
All are welcome to join the screening of “Beast of Our Time” and panel discussion Friday, June 13th starting at 6pm. The event is free and light refreshments will be provided.
