ST GEORGES HALL. DEAD HAUNTED. £68
Welcome to your Paranormal Investigation at St Georges Hall. A building rich in intrigue and History.
Dead Haunted are fortunate enough to have access to numerous areas from former Court Rooms, Cells and Catacombs. Are you brave enough to join us in the dark?
As you will probably know, this building is not investigated often and we at Dead Haunted UK are lucky enough to have been granted access.
St George's Hall is widely regarded as one of the finest neo-classical buildings in the world and is Grade I listed. It was designed by Harvey Lonsdale Elms; it opened its doors to the public in 1854.
Although the hall was built initially to provide a venue for the triennial music festivals, Law Courts were later added. This was due to funding issues.
St George's Hall stands proudly at 169ft long and 74ft wide, it has a tunnel vaulted ceiling - the largest of its kind in Europe. The ceiling is supported on massive red granite columns, with figures portraying qualities Victorian Liverpool aspired to - art, science, fortitude and justice.
Behind the gold leaf and porticoes, the Hall has one of the greatest brick arches in the world and houses a priceless mosaic floor of 30,000 tiles. When the unique Minton tiled floor was uncovered to mark the Hall's centenary in 1954, more than 100,000 people queued to see it.
The Hall is also home to a concert organ complete with 7,000 pipes, second only in size to the organ in the Albert Hall.
The Concert Hall is the largest area, rectangular in shape, and occupies the centre of the building with an organ on its north wall. To the north of the Concert Hall is the Civil Court and beyond this is the elliptical Small Concert Room. To the south of the Concert Hall are the Crown Court and the Grand Jury Room. Smaller court rooms are on the periphery of the larger courts. The floor below consists of a cavernous basement with cells for prisoners along the west wall.
The catacombs and cells below the courts are an area where histories of more unsavoury characters could be found - are they still here? Cells where the condemned spent their final hours are particularly chilly and eerie.
The cells have been used to house criminals, have been a makeshift billeting quarter for the police and army during the Liverpool Transport Strikes of 1911 and were used as Food and Water stores during the Second World War.
Deeper in the catacombs you’ll find the cells of Black Widow Sisters who were convicted of murdering people for insurance money. Will we hear their desperate cries for help or will be meet the restless spirits of others, convicted of crimes ranging from petty theft to murder and sent to spend sometimes the rest of their lives in the depth of one of Liverpool's Grandest Buildings.
