We're coming together to raise funds for The Shweika Children's Centre in Tulkarm, in the Occupied Palestinian West Bank. The centre is a pillar of Tulkarm's community, providing summer and winter camps for young people in the municipality as well as leadership programmes for young women, sports teams and IT classes. We are a group comprised of community activists, trade unionists and social workers.
With fantastic music from local legends The Loose Moose String Band and Ellen Mcgovern, it's shaping up to be an amazing event. We have messages and speeches from The Shweika Centre directly, as well as raffles, silent auctions and stalls.
The centre is relied upon by working families, to provide support during school breaks and it's where most of the municipality's extracurricular activity for young people takes place.
Donald Trump's foreign policy has resulted in huge chunks of foreign aid being swept away from those who previously relied on it. The centre used to receive yearly donations from USAID, but as of last year that has stopped. They're now entirely reliant on local donations, from a community that is largely unable to work due to the economic strangle-hold the illegal Israeli occupation has the area. Tulkarm is an area that has been devastated since the genocide in Palestine began in 2023. Both refugee camps, Tulkarm Camp and Nour Shams Camp, have been reduced to rubble. Many of Tulkarm's refugees have had to again seek shelter wherever they can, reminiscent of the scenes of the 1948 Nakba.
Right now, the centre is more important than ever, as a lifeline for the young people of Tulkarm. The people of Shweika are remaining steadfast as ever in support of their community centre with donations.
We are not asking for charity, we are asking for you to extend the same material, tangible support for the centre that those in Tulkarm are managing to find, despite having little to give.
All tickets are £10 (+ eventrite admin fee) and all proceeds to are to be sent to Shweika Centre in Tulkarm.
We look forward to seeing you there
