Among them was future Manchester City footballing legend Bert Trautmann, discovered playing on the camp pitch.What followed was an extraordinary, heartwarming story of love and reconciliation: three young German soldiers—Rolf Rheinlander, Eric Kirste, and Frederick Kooper—met local Liverpool women Jean, Eleanor, and Minnette. Against all odds, the men married, settled locally, and became an enduring, beloved part of the Merseyside community.Playwright Mike Howl met the original ex-prisoners and their families to record their personal memories and preserve their living history.
