As the musicians warm up, there will be an hour to explore the House on your own and to examine special objects from the collection up close under the expert guidance of our collections team. Gather round to see a rare first edition of Persuasion, and one of Jane’s own handwritten music books.

From 4-5pm, drop into the Historic Kitchen to join acclaimed historian and author Lucinda Hawksley for an informal Austen drinks party, chat about all things Austen, and raise a glass to our favourite authoress!

At 5pm we’ll move into the Drawing Room, where Jane herself practiced the piano each morning, for an intimate concert performed by The Sylvan Duo – Harpist Megan Humphries and Soprano Lucy Breakwell – and poignant readings from Persuasion.

Inspired by the concert attended by Anne and Wentworth, and concerts that Jane Austen herself attended in the Bath Assembly Rooms, Megan and Lucy will perform musical magic – whisking us back in time to the early 1800s.

About The Sylvan Duo:

Megan Humphries is an award-winning young harpist based in London and Yorkshire who has performed across the United Kingdom in venues such as The Royal Albert Hall, Festival Hall, Wigmore Hall and The Barbican. A regular performer for social events, she has played at events like London Fashion Week, at venues like Leeds Castle and Spencer House and for names like the Duchess of Gloucester, the Archbishop of York, John Sentamu and Jacob Collier.

Megan was a Royal Academy of Music scholar for both undergraduate and postgraduate studies, where she studied with Suzy Willison-Kawalec. She previously studied with Claire Jones, former harpist to HRH Prince of Wales and best-selling Classic FM artist.

Dorset-born soprano Lucy Breakwell is currently in the final year of the Graduate Diploma of the RNCM programme after gaining a First with the Dean’s Award in Music from The University of Manchester. She studies with Yvonne Howard and Christopher Turner. Solo operatic roles include premiering the role of Eliza Patterson in The Water Mark (RNCM Community Opera), Frog/Frog’s Grandson (The Cunning Little Vixen, RNCM Opera), First Alms Sister (Suor Angelica, Dorset Opera Festival), Eurydice (Orpheus in the Underworld, MUMS Opera), and Bastienne (Bread and Bus Stop), along with opera scenes performances as Sifare and Zerlina (RNCM Opera). As a concert soloist, she has performed Mozart’s Requiem and Haydn’s Little Organ Mass with City of London Sinfonia, and Libby Larsen’s Missa Gaia: Mass for the Earth, and Schubert’s Mass No. 2 in G major with Preston Cecilian Choral Society. She was recently selected as a recipient of the Luxon Amit Bursary Award, and joins Waterperry Opera Festival this summer as a Young Artist.
