Join Cult Classic Lismore for a screening of Paul Verhoeven's RoboCop at the historic Star Court Theatre.
Set in a dystopian near-future Detroit, crime runs rampant and the police department is on the brink of collapse. Enter Omni Consumer Products, the corporation with a plan to "save" the city through privatisation, robotics, and ruthless efficiency. When officer Alex Murphy (Peter Weller) is gunned down, he is reborn as RoboCop, a state-of-the-art law enforcement machine programmed to serve the public trust, protect the innocent, and uphold the law.
But RoboCop isn't just a slab of steel and circuitry. As memories of his former life begin to surface, Murphy must confront the corporation that created him and the violent criminals that destroyed him, including Clarence Boddicker (Kurtwood Smith, gloriously unhinged).
Equal parts action spectacle, biting satire, and ultra-violent dark comedy, RoboCop remains one of the sharpest and most subversive blockbusters of the 1980s.
Beneath the explosions and quotable one-liners lies a savage critique of corporate greed, media sensationalism, and the commodification of public services, themes that feel eerily relevant today.
