A peculiar atmosfera claustrofóbica e o negro pessimismo desta desconstrução do mito do Oeste antilinchamento aliam-se à interrogação da noção de justiça e à denúncia da “justiça popular” na esteira de filmes como FURY de Fritz Lang e THEY WON’T FORGET de Mervyn LeRoy (1936-37). O bando de cowboys e camponeses junta-se para vingar a morte de um membro da sua comunidade, enquanto, a montante, o elenco reúne Henry Fonda, Dana Andrews, Mary Beth Hughes, Anthony Quinn e Jane Darwell entre demais bravos. Foi um projeto intensamente acarinhado por Wellman, que aceitou assinar um contrato de cinco anos com a 20th Century Fox (1943-48), e realizar dois guiões tal como lhe chegassem do estúdio, em troca de THE OX-BOW INCIDENT. Sem surpresa, falhou a bilheteira e é um dos mais respeitados Wellman. A apresentar em digital.
