We are excited to share a unique and meaningful America 250 engagement opportunity that extends beyond traditional Fourth of July celebrations. Partnering with Chesapeake Crossroads Heritage Area (CCHA) we invite anyone interested in joining us to participate in Sharing the Spirit of America, a region-wide public reading of the Declaration of Independence on Wednesday, July 8, 2026, at 6:00 p.m. EDT.  

This event commemorates the moment 250 years ago when Americans first gathered to hear the Declaration read aloud in public. 

We will be gathering on the front porch area of the Benson-Hammond House and will join the simultaneous reading that is happening all across America. Come be a part of history! 

Why July 8?

On July 8, 1776, Colonel John Nixon delivered the first public reading of the Declaration of Independence in Philadelphia's State House Yard (now Independence Square). For many colonists, it was their first opportunity to hear the revolutionary ideals of liberty, equality, and self-government that would shape a new nation. In an era when newspapers were limited and literacy was not universal, public readings were essential for sharing these transformative ideas.
