- **Event Description**: LEARN THE BEAUTIFUL FOLK ART OF JAPANESE FISH PRINTING ~ (Gyotaku)

Octopus and the wild and finny creatures they share the oceans.

Join artist Duncan Berry for a deep dive into this magnificent art form, where you’ll create original prints directly from the marine species themselves. This full-day, six-hour workshop is perfect for beginners and experienced artists alike, combining hands-on technique with fascinating natural history.

The class will be hosted upstairs at the exquisite Pelican Brewing, overlooking Siletz Bay, where the views are as breathtaking as the artwork you’ll take home.

When: Saturday, March 14th 2026 ~ 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM

Where: Pelican Brew Pub / Siletz Bay / 2nd floor.

What: This immersive six-hour workshop offers a rare opportunity to create a dozen or more striking, direct impression prints inspired by octopus and fin fish that inhabit Oregon’s coastal waters. Guided by master printer and naturalist Duncan Berry, participants will explore the textures, forms, and movement of these remarkable animals through the traditional art of gyotaku.

Working with real specimens, artists will print octopus of varying sizes alongside a variety of locally relevant fin fish, revealing details that are often missed at first glance—suckers, scales, fins, and subtle patterns shaped by life in the sea. No prior art experience is necessary. All instruction, materials, specimens, and lunch are included.

As a special bonus, participants will learn fascinating, story-rich insights about the lives of octopus and fin fish, as well as how these species fit into Oregon’s Marine Reserve program. These bite-sized bits of science and natural history unfold naturally as you print—and make for great conversation when friends and family admire your finished work.

Who: The workshop is taught by Duncan Berry, Master Gyotaku artist and naturalist. Duncan now offers only a handful of workshops each year, making this a rare chance to learn directly from his decades of experience refining and expanding this traditional printing technique.

Cost: $300 — includes six hours of instruction, all materials and specimens, and a delicious lunch from Pelican.

Experience Level: No prior experience needed, welcoming to beginners and deeply rewarding for experienced printers.

Capacity: Limited to 15 participants for a hands-on, personalized experience.
