Bradfield Community Center Launches Free Nite Hoops Program Oct. 3
Saturday evening program combines basketball, mentorship, and life skills for students in grades 5-12

LIMA, Ohio — Bradfield Community Center will launch Nite Hoops, a free youth development program for students in grades 5-12, on Saturday, Oct. 3, 2026, at Lima Senior High School. The fall session will run Saturdays through Nov. 21, from 7 to 11 p.m.
Guided by the motto “Beyond the Ball. Hustle. Heart. Community,” Nite Hoops uses basketball to build skills, relationships, and life lessons.
“Nite Hoops reflects Bradfield’s commitment to creating opportunities for young people and supporting families,” said Chris Jackson, executive director of Bradfield Community Center, trustee, and Nite Hoops committee member. “We want participants to know they have a place where they are welcome, where they can grow and where adults are invested in their success.”
The program will offer separate elementary, middle school, and high school basketball groups, plus a mixed-grade Skills Gym for learning fundamentals and improving abilities. All skill levels are welcome, including beginners and students who do not play organized school sports.
“You don’t have to be the most experienced player in the gym to benefit from this program,” said Robert Seggerson, Bradfield Community Center trustee and Nite Hoops committee member. “We want young people to build confidence, learn the fundamentals, and experience the satisfaction of getting better through practice and effort.”
Each evening will include basketball and a Halftime Huddle covering life skills such as managing emotions, making decisions, communicating respectfully, setting goals and developing leadership skills.
“Basketball gives us opportunities to talk about how we respond when things don’t go our way, how we treat others and how our choices affect the people around us,” said Gregory Williamson, Bradfield Community Center trustee and Nite Hoops committee member. “The Halftime Huddle will help participants connect those moments on the court to situations they face in everyday life.”
Player of the Week and other recognition will honor effort, sportsmanship, teamwork, leadership, and personal growth.
“A young person who encourages a teammate or keeps working on a new skill deserves to be noticed,” said John Bean, Bradfield Community Center trustee and Nite Hoops committee member. “We want to celebrate those contributions and help every participant see that they have something valuable to offer.”
The City of Lima is supporting Nite Hoops through funding provided by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program, helping expand access to positive youth programming and mentorship opportunities in the community.
“Investing CDBG dollars in programs like Nite Hoops is an investment in the strength and stability of our neighborhoods,” said Carmillia Zion, director of Housing and Neighborhoods for the City of Lima. “Strong neighborhoods are about more than housing and infrastructure. They are also about creating safe, positive spaces where young people can gather, build relationships, and know that their community is invested in their future.”
The city’s support reflects the broader goals of Community Development Block Grant funding by investing in programs and partnerships that strengthen neighborhoods and expand opportunities for residents.
“CDBG funding is intended to strengthen communities by investing in the people and neighborhoods we serve,” said Dionne Dickey, community development specialist for the City of Lima. “Nite Hoops puts those goals into action by providing young people with a safe, positive environment where they can build relationships, connect with mentors, and develop skills that support their growth both on and off the court.”
Registration is open, and participation is free. A Bradfield Community Center membership is not required. Parents or guardians must register each youth separately and arrange transportation home at 11 p.m. unless another arrangement has been confirmed.

Bradfield welcomes volunteers, donations, and sponsorships to support Nite Hoops. Opportunities include helping with basketball activities, registration and program operations, as well as providing equipment and supplies.
