The next VanPS Field trip is to Ashcroft, BC on October 19 (Sunday).

It will take approximately four hours each way to drive to Ashcroft and back to the mainland. I recommend staying the night before at one of the motels in Ashcroft and Cache Creek.
On Sunday, October 20, please meet at the Safety Mart Foods parking lot (105 Railway Ave) in Ashcroft at 9 AM. We will then visit a fossil site of the Upper Triassic, Nicola group. We will drive on a dirt road about 20-30 minutes south of Ashcroft. An SUV or truck is recommended but not required as it can be accessed by car as well.
Level of difficulty - Moderate. You can surface collect near the road but if you want to explore more of the large outcrop, you will need to climb higher up the rocks along the hillside which can be physically demanding.
Equipment required: Geological or Brick Layers Hammer, 3-4 lb mini sledge hammer and cold flat chisels. Eye protection 🥽 and work / gardening gloves and recommended.
Type of fossils: Triassic marine invertebrates such as ammonites, bivalves, gastropods and belemnites.
The road is gravel and generally well maintained. It does have some pot holes and bumps but cars can be driven on it. A higher ground clearer vehicle is recommended but not required. The main site we are visiting is just off the road. The other site is a hillside about a half km walk south of this location.
