- **Event Description**: Field Trip to Lytton - Saturday, April 25, 2026
We'll be searching for ammonites, belemnites, bivalves, gastropods and fossilised wood from the Lower Cretaceous (Aptian), Jackass Mountain Group along the Fraser River. Please note fossils are not common or easy to find from this location.  But you'll be treated with the stunning beauty of the mighty Fraser River Canyon. Any important fossils useful for dating the age of this locality could be donated to Jim Haggart of the Geological Survey of Canada.
The site is approximately 3 1/2 to 2 1/2 hours drive from the lower mainland (depending on your location). The first part is near the the parking area. But the second part of the site requires a one km walk and ends in a short but steep trail down to the Fraser river.

Tools recommended - You will need a geological or bricklayer's hammer and a flat masonry chisel or rock hammer, safety goggles and gloves. Also a heavier 2-4 lb small sledge hammer is recommended. You may also want to bring a flat cold chisel to help split rock or remove fossils from the surrounding rock. Newspaper, aluminum foil or bubble wrap to wrap your fossils in and backpack to carry them in.

Clothing - please wear appropriate clothing for the rainy weather on the day.

Footwear - Hiking shoes or boots

Please bring enough water/liquids and food. There are no bathroom facilities nearby.

Please note, this is a members only event. You'll need to be a member of the societies of the BCPA (https://bcfossils.ca/) such as Vancouver Paleontological Society, VicPS, VIPMS, or VIPS to attend this event.
