Sponsored by the Ligonier Valley Rail Road Association with the kind cooperation of the Old Colony Sportsmen’s Association.

This event is FREE and open to the public. No reservations are required.

When: Saturday, April 11, 2026, from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Location: Old Colony Sportsmen’s Association, 402 Peoples Road, Ligonier, PA.
Directions: Take Route 711 North from Ligonier. About 1 mile from the Diamond, just past the bridge over Mill Creek, turn left on Peoples Road. After about 1.5 miles on Peoples Road, turn right into the Old Colony Sportsmen’s Association.

Visitors will be able to view coke ovens that are approximately 100 years old and learn about the history of the coke oven industry in the Ligonier Valley, which produced a valuable fuel for steel production. The Ligonier Valley Rail Road serviced numerous coal mines and coke ovens in the valley, including those at Old Colony, Wilpen, Fort Palmer and Marietta. In total, these regional operations produced more than four million tons of coke. During the 22 years of activity at Old Colony alone (1904-1926) approximately 640,000 tons of coke were produced by the 128 coke ovens built at the site, a large portion of which is now the home of the Old Colony Sportsmen’s Association.

This event will be held rain or shine. Guests should arrive in a truck or SUV to properly access the parking area. This event will also require walking about ½-mile on uneven ground. An all-terrain vehicle will be available. Please plan and dress appropriately.

For more information about Coke Oven Day, please contact Ligonier Valley Rail Road Association Vice President Doug Kurtz at 724-575-3165 or info@lvrra.org.

Though the event is free, donations will be gratefully appreciated.
