This presentation explores how social connection, play, and lifestyle habits protect brain health and promote wellness in older adults. Through six dimensions of wellness—social, emotional, intellectual, spiritual, occupational, and physical—the speaker will outline simple, evidence-based strategies such as physical activity, quality nutrition, mindfulness, laughter, and play to strengthen executive functions and support lifelong brain health. The presentation concludes with practical, community-focused approaches from Building Brains Together that foster joy, connection, and purpose in later life.
Speaker: Dr. Robbin Gibb
Dr. Gibb is a Professor and Chair of the Neuroscience Department at the University of Lethbridge. Her research explores how early life experiences, such as gentle touch and play, help the brain grow and adapt throughout life. She and her students study how these experiences can build resilience and support recovery from stress or injury. Dr. Gibb also leads Building Brains Together (BBT), a community program that helps children and families strengthen thinking and self-regulation skills through play.
Recently, BBT started play programming with seniors to engage and strengthen important executive function skills that contribute to life satisfaction. Over her career, Dr. Gibb has published more than 100 scientific papers, book chapters, and books, and she enjoys giving public talks that make brain science accessible and relevant to everyday life. She is passionate about sharing what science teaches us about the developing brain in ways that can benefit people of all ages.
