Join us for a transformative two-day Gong Workshop, open to both beginners and
experienced players. This immersive experience is designed to deepen your connection
with the gong, develop and fine-tune your playing techniques, and expand your creative
expression.
In our time together, we'll explore:
• Drone Strokes:
Combining fast repetitions of strokes to create
resonant, sustaining tones with dynamic variations
• Tone Strokes:
Perfect your single strokes for clear, articulate sounds
that ads precision to your performance.
• Rhythm and Timing:
Explore subdivisions of time, rhythmic patterns, and
refine your timing to enhance the flow of your playing-
working with both long and short durations of sound.
• Texture:
Develop a wide range of textures that add depth and
dimension to your music.
• Volume Control:
Learn how to shape dynamics for expressive, intentional playing
• Mallet Play and Hand Independence:
Explore the interaction between mallets to enrich your sound,
experiment with different mallet styles in each hand, and develop
strokes that allow for independent tones and rhythms.
• Muting and Dampening:
Use your hand or body to stop or dampen the gong's
sound, integrating this technique rhythmically
• Intuitive Improvisation:
Engage in creative exploration using shared
techniques unlocking new variations and sonic possibilities.
• Spontaneous Composition:
Develop on-the-spot musical structures and creative responses.
• Conduction & Guided Orchestration:
Be a part of a creative soundscape orchestration directed through
gestural or guided cues
•Control: Refine your touch, articulation, and overall command of the gong.
This workshop provides a supportive space for deep exploration, blending technique with
creativity to expand your approach to gong playing.
Bio
Mike Tamburo is a world-renowned musician composer, artist and educator known for his transformational live concerts performed on a personally curated set of gongs, bells, hammered dulcimer and other metal instruments.
As lifelong multi-instrumentalist Tamburo has focused his talents on metal percussion, string instruments (hammered dulcimer quitar, zither, shahi baaja), and electronic instruments (synths, looping).
Since 1994, he has shared over 2,500 concerts and workshops and released more than 70 albums -solo and with Crown of Eternity, Meisha, Arco Flute Foundation, Psychic Frost Brother Ong, and others.
His work spans gong music, ecstatic strina music, folk, drone, ambient mantra and
experimental sounds
He is also a gong teacher, an interdisciplinary sound artist, instrument builder, video
artist, sound worker, writer, and meditation teacher.
