- **Event Description**: A public workshop kicks off a series of conversations about the rivers and streams flowing from the Matakana, Sandspit and Takatu regions through residential, agricultural and commercial areas and into Sandspit estuary and Kawau Bay.

Friends of Awa Matakanakana want to hear the community’s aspirations and concerns about the catchment. What do people understand and value about local waterways, wetlands and estuaries? Maybe it’s biodiversity or resilience to flooding and erosion. Even the joy of watching the eels at Matakana market.

We want to hear from residents, farmers, business owners, local hapu, environmental groups, clubs, river and estuary users and fishers, young people, those new to the area – everyone who has an interest in the catchment.

The outcome of the workshops will be a community-led integrated catchment plan (CICP) containing a tangible list of actions that belong to the community.

You don’t need to live within the catchment to be part of the conversation, you just need to care about it.

The CICP process is being driven by volunteers from Friends of Awa Matakanakana, but everyone has a voice and it belongs to the community. Rodney Local Board and Auckland Council’s Healthy Waters Rural Wai Ora Partnerships are providing funding and support for workshops and the input of Duncan Kervell, a land and catchment management advisor.

Register now for the first workshop at Matakana Hall, 1-4pm, Sunday 15 March. This will help us cater and keep you up-to-date.
