Since 1948, a series of astonishing discoveries have emerged from a wooded hillside near the modern village of Snettisham in Norfolk. Collectively known as the “Snettisham Treasure,” this assemblage, which includes numerous gold and silver alloy torcs, constitutes one of the most significant collections of ancient precious metal jewellery ever uncovered. These artefacts were buried across at least 14 distinct hoards, spanning the late Iron Age and early Roman periods, with a notable concentration of activity around 60 BC.

Drawing on the first comprehensive publication of the site, this talk from Julia Farley explores the social and landscape context of the site, arguing that the impact of consigning this material to the ground was transformative, driving significant societal changes in the Late Iron Age.
