- **Event Start and End Date**: Fri, 05 Dec, 2025 at 09:00 am – Fri, 05 Dec, 2025 at 12:30 pm
- **Event Description**: Exploring the vital role of drainage, for both productivity and environmental goals, through the launch of our new field drainage trial.About this EventFor generations farmers have appreciated the value of effective field drainage - to remove excess water from the land, for crop productivity and for farm business profitability. However, there are also myriad environmental benefits to be expected from well-drained agricultural soils relating to reduced surface run-off and erosion, improved soil health and structure and reduced compaction and waterlogging. And yet, many of the field drainage schemes installed until the cessation of government grant-aid in the mid-1980s are now beyond their service lives, and limited new drainage is being undertaken today. The Allerton Project, alongside industry partners, has undertaken a groundbreaking new field drainage trial to establish how a modern field drainage system impacts a range of environmental outcomes, as well as crop productivity and integrated pest management. Attend our kick-off demonstration event and hear from:Joe Stanley (Allerton Project) - Introduction to the projectPeter Brown (Catchment Sensitive Farming) - Soil & Water management priorities & available fundingHenry Lowth (AHDB) - AHDB’s Strategic Cereal Farm North & field drainageRob Burtonshaw (Farm Services) - Factors to consider in a drainage installDr Jenny Bussell (Allerton Project) - What are we measuring and why? Please arrive at the Allerton Project Visitor Centre at 9.00am for bacon baps and coffee. "description": "The Allerton Project researches the effects of different farming methods on wildlife and the environment, sharing results of our research through advisory and educational activities. This is undertaken on our 320 hectare demonstration farm based in Leicestershire, United Kingdom. We identify management that delivers multiple benefits for our rural landscape. Our work covers natural capital accounting, agri-environment schemes and regenerative farming systems. From soil and water, to woodland and environmental habitat that increases biodiversity, our aim is to build farmland resilience. Our own research team collaborate with other research organisations and help co-supervise numerous PhD and MSc projects.Visitors to the project include businesses, policy makers, non-government organisations, regulators, farmers, advisors, students and schools. We have several initiatives that involve the local community to help improve a shared understanding of agricultural and environmental issues.Commercial farming and environmental rejuvenation will be successful with considered policy and interventions from those that manage our countryside. In essence, the Allerton Project is an award winning, pioneering blueprint for future rural landscapes."
