Daniel Lambert - 'My Big Friend'
Join us as we celebrate Daniel Lambert's 250th Birthday with this engaging talk from the author of ‘The Daniel Lambert Picture Book’, Roger Street.
Daniel Lambert has been remembered for more than two hundred years as England’s heaviest man, weighing in eventually at 52 stone 11 pounds. But he deserves to be remembered for much more than this. He had a great interest in field sports and was highly respected for his knowledge and experience of breeding dogs and cockerels. He was a benevolent keeper of the County Bridewell Pr*son, but when closed in 1805 he became something of a recluse. He reluctantly decided that to provide a regular income he was going to exhibit himself in London. He died in Stamford in 1809 and his Leicester friends paid for a gravestone there, the inscription referring to his ‘exalted and convivial mind.
