- **Event Description**: Join us for the premiere of a new short film 'Crossing the Line: Rethinking the Alpha Victim'.About this EventJoin us for the premiere of Crossing the Line: Rethinking the Alpha Victim, a new short film produced as part of the Vulnerability & Policing Futures Research Centre’s project Rethinking the Alpha Victim. This special screening will be followed by a Q&A with members of the research and production team, as well as child criminal exploitation experts from the police, social work, and third sector.About the filmCrossing the Line follows the story of Alfie Parker, a teenager whose life has become tangled in exploitation and county lines drug trafficking. Frequently described as a “complex case”, Alfie’s experiences are examined through the lens of a multi-agency meeting, where professionals assess his situation, risks, and vulnerabilities. While practitioners discuss Alfie, the film centres Alfie’s own voice, revealing how manipulation, fear, and a lack of meaningful support contributed to his exploitation. Through his story, the film challenges the label of “alpha victim” and prompts viewers to reconsider the systems and assumptions that shape responses to young people at risk.About the productionThis film is one element of a broader set of practitioner-focused resources being launched as part of the Rethinking the Alpha Victim project. Developed with care, sensitivity, and authenticity, the film was created in close collaboration with front-line practitioners and was produced by Digifish Limited.Q&A sessionFollowing the screening, join researchers, members of the production team and child criminal exploitation experts for a discussion about:the making of the filmthe research underpinning the project and key themesthe concept of the “alpha victim”how practitioners can use the film and other resources in safeguarding and support contextsQ&A panellistsJunior Smart, OBEKirsten Dent, National County Lines Coordination CentreHeather Wilson, Bradford Children and Families TrustPaul Banks, Director, DigifishChris Devany, Vulnerability and Policing Futures Research CentreAmy Loughery, Vulnerability and Policing Futures Research CentreChair: Laura Bainbridge, Vulnerability and Policing Futures Research Centre and University of LeedsWho should attend? This event will be valuable for:safeguarding practitionerssocial workerseducation professionalspolice officersheath professionalsyouth justice professionalsfoster carers and residential children’s home staffanyone engaged in child protection, exploitation, or safeguarding workPlease join us to reflect and contribute to this important conversation.

"description": "The Vulnerability & Policing Futures Research Centre aims to reshape how the police and other organisations work together in order to reduce harm among vulnerable people in society. \nThe causes and characteristics of vulnerability are complex. The remits of the police and partner organisations intersect in complicated and shifting ways when it comes to policing vulnerability. Our wide-ranging research is built on effective collaborations with police and those partner organisations, such as local authorities, charities and non-governmental organisations. This allows us to understand perspectives from a range of services and the people who use them, while gaining new insights through a variety of research methods. By doing this, we can understand how vulnerability develops in different areas and how organisations can work together to tackle problems such as exploitation by county lines drug networks, online child sexual exploitation, domestic abuse, modern slavery, mental illness and homelessness.\nThrough our research, we can pioneer new, integrated approaches to drive positive change in the ways police and other services respond to these problems, benefitting vulnerable people and the organisations who work with them. The Vulnerability & Policing Futures Research Centre is jointly hosted by the \nUniversity of York\n and the \nUniversity of Leeds\n, and is funded by the \nEconomic and Social Research Council\n (ESRC)."
