Leeds Vocal Movement Workshop: 0-to-singing with Neil Balfour

Leeds Vocal Movement is offering its first public singing workshop! This interactive, practical workshop will aim to show, through fun vocal discovery, just how to get the best out of any singer in the society. Discover exactly ‘what’ voice you are, how to sing your strongest solos and how to blend with others to make a rich vocal sound.

This session is for seasoned choir members and new recruits, expelling the myths associated with singing.

About Neil Balfour

Half-indian, half-scottish bass-baritone, Neil Balfour, is an opera singer whose repertoire spans a diverse range of music. He graduated from the Royal Northern College of Music with Masters distinction under singing teacher Nicholas Powell. Upcoming 2018 performances include, touring the role of Don Alfonso in Cosi Fan Tutte with Heritage Opera, Betto in Gianni Schicchi for the Macready Theatre in Rugby and a return to the Isle of Man to perform the title role of Don Pasquale andsoloist inHaydn’s Mass in Time of War and premiere of Maeve Rendle’s What Cannot be Turned Aside. Recent performances have included Mustafà in Rossini’s L'italiana in Algeri for Mananan Opera on the Isle of Man, covering Don Alfonso for Opera Hollad Park and being on the young artist programme for Buxton Festival opera in Verdi’s Macbeth. Neil recently premiered the role of Dad/La-La in A Shoe Full of Stars by Omar Sharyar with Libretto by Ed Harris.Previously, Neil has covered Figaro in Le Nozze di Figaro for Longborough Festival Opera and shadowed the role of Lt. Ratcliffe in Opera North’s production of Billy Budd. Operatic roles have included Figaro, Bartolo and Antonio in Le Nozze di Figaro, Quince in A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Lord Ellington in La Vie Parisienne, Arkel in Pelléas et Mélisande, Baculus in Der Wildschütz, Barone di Kelbar in Un Giorno di Regno, Stanley in A Streetcar Named Desire and world premiere of Nikolaus’s father in Mysterious 44 by Kevin Malone. Other jobs of interest include being the creator of www.artsongstory.com, doing voice-over work for Youtube Channel’s with views on his videos reaching well over 100 million, premiering the first electronic opera, conducting 300+ mass choirs and performing a private show for Her Majesty The Queen.


Leeds Vocal Movement

Leeds Vocal Movement (LVM) is an un-auditioned SATB choir based in Leeds, West Yorkshire. Directed by Caitlin Mayall, our choir aims to bridge the gap between youth choirs and choral societies. We provide musical opportunities for young adults between the ages of 18 and 35, such as workshops, concerts and more. This is our first workshop of many, so please send us an email if you are interested in finding out about future events.




What level of singing do I need for this event? 

This event is catered to both those who haven't sung before, and for seasoned singers and choir members. You don't need any previous experience of singing to attend. 

Do I need to bring anything in advance?

All of the music will be provided for you at the event. We recommend that you bring a bottle of water, and any refreshments you would want during the break.
