Every day in the UK around 11 children and young people find out they have cancer. For their families, the diagnosis can be life changing. At Shine a Light, we help families get through these challenging times by providing a range of vital support services and an understanding shoulder to lean on. We support families of children and young people up to the age of 24, for as long as they need us. If you live in the Coventry and Warwickshire area and are affected by childhood cancer, we are here for you.
As one of the families Shine A Light have supported, the Bufton family have created this event to raise funds for the charity, to ensure that we can continue to support families like them. Please read on to find out more about their story.
Our little boy Hugo was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL) in June 2021, at the age of 3 and a half, after being poorly with eye infections and high temperatures in the months before. After initial investigations at Warwick Hospital, he was transferred to Birmingham Childrens Hospital for various tests, which ended with us getting the diagnosis we were dreading. The diagnosis shocked our whole world as a family, and it took a while for the reality to sink in.
In September 2021 Hugo had his first central line fitted and started the long process of his Chemotherapy treatment. It was a tough and upsetting journey for both Hugo and us as a family. As a parent, you feel helpless, unable to do anything to "fix" the situation. With frequent hospital visits for Hugo, and feeling very poorly due to the chemo side effects, it was a long process, and affected the whole family. During his treatment, we had help and support from several childrens cancer charities including a lot of much needed and very welcome support from Shine a Light charity.
In November 2024 Hugo officially finished his chemotherapy treatment, and got to ring the bell at UHCW in Coventry. He is now a fit and healthy boy who loves swimming and playing football, and is living life to the full.
Sam and her team have been amazing from the start, providing support for us a family. They've helped Hugo get through his treatment with fun days out (including The Classic Car show at the NEC in Birmingham where he got to ride in a Mustang!!), activities, parties, xmas and easter hampers for him and his brothers and sisters, and so much more. Their support for children with cancer, and their families is amazing, and very much needed and appreciated. The whole team work so hard to give amazing support to so many families going through the same situation.
