Forest bathing, also known as Shinrin yoku, was developed in Japan in the 1980’s to reduce stress levels and promote healthier lifestyles by encouraging people to spend time in forests and green spaces. It is a set of mindfulness practices and meditative activities designed to calm the nervous system, awaken the senses and bring us all into a meaningful relationship with nature.
Benefits of this digital detox practice are designed to help us slow down and notice our natural surroundings, really bathing in the smells, sights and sounds of nature. Noticing and really taking in the small things we can often miss on walks.
What will we be doing?
During this two-hour session, you will be led by forest bathing guide, Tracey, certified through Treeming. org. You will be taken on a slow paced, gentle walk, through a woodland stopping at points along the way.
What do I need to take part?
No prior experience or fitness is necessary beyond the ability to stand and walk slowly for a maximum of two hours. Please be aware this event is for adults over 18 years old.
No dogs allowed.
We may stand or sit on the ground at various points during the session. Sit mats are provided during the walk, however if sitting at ground level is difficult for you, I recommend bringing and carrying a light folding chair or seated walking stick.
We will be connecting with natural spaces, there is no swimming involved and participants stay fully clothed.
This activity takes place outdoors, once inside the woodland the ground will be an uneven surface, which may be muddy, and slippery in places, we recommend appropriate clothing for all weather, including sturdy footwear, warm waterproof layers, bottled water, insect protection, sunscreen, sun hat, a light jacket, something to sit on or a sit mat. Consider a walking stick if needed.
There will be the opportunity to sit on logs/bench which are placed both out or under cover at a couple of points during our walk.
There is a compost toilet on site. I recommend bringing your own tissue paper and hand gel.
