Weedon Island in 1926: Built Landscape, Construction Camp, and Willie Cole

This talk examines Weedon Island in the mid-1920s using a contemporary aerial photograph and documentary sources. It discusses five built areas visible in a 1926 aerial, with particular attention to a construction camp. The presentation also addresses the murder trial of Willie Cole, drawing in part on documentary research by the author that appeared in the CGCAS Bulletin. The construction camp discussed will be the focus of the author’s master’s thesis.

Richard McDaniel is a St. Petersburg native and a board member of the Alliance for Weedon Island Archaeological Research and Education, with which he has been involved since 2023. He is a member of the Central Gulf Coast Archaeological Society and is currently a graduate student in the Cultural and Heritage Resource Management program at the University of Maryland, College Park. He has over ten years of experience in cultural resource management archaeology.
