An opportunity for public comment on the North Lawrence Corridor Study will be Wednesday, December 10, 4 – 7 PM, at Venue 1235. This economic development study includes high quality farmland around both North Lawrence and the Airport. The Northeast Sector Plan recommended “the preservation of high-quality agricultural land (Class I and II soils).” As illustrated in the below photos, this land can quickly flood. Storm water runoff from future industrial development in this proposal Corridor Study can flood North Lawrence. Global warming will bring even more extreme weather events including flooding.
On December 6, the Lawrence Journal World recently reported Mayor Brad Finkeldei's vision for growth.
"So too is the activity in the city’s industrial areas, which Finkeldei says Lawrence will soon need more of.
“We’ve been filling up our industrial land,” he said. “We’re not going to have very many lots left, and we have to be looking at the next industrial park.”
Then there’s the North Lawrence corridor study, which will look at the future of not only that neighborhood, but also the unincorporated areas north of town and Lawrence Regional Airport. The airport and the nearby access to I-70 will be especially important for the future of that area, Finkeldei believes."
Douglas County is also exploring land use regulations on data centers.
The 2023 North Lawrence Community Survey identified these needed improvements: storm water drainage, maintained streets and sidewalks, public safety, train crossing safety, increased access to amenities and services, a grocery store, improved access to the waterfront, support for Woodlawn Elementary school, community connections and engagement, and a compassionate and holistic approach addressing homelessness.
Please bring your comments on the quality of life you envision for North Lawrence.
