Inspired by surface and materiality, Jen Unekis paints on sealed Venetian plaster panels. She works in acrylic, graphite, China, and glass pencil, with a liquid airbrush medium to capture the immediacy she needs for building spontaneous layers and movement. Her process is intuitive yet deliberate. She studies the way color pools against an inky line, and how delicate graphite marks can be partially obscured by paint yet still quietly command attention. The result is work that feels both instinctive and intentional—images that balance gesture with structure and familiarity with ambiguity.

Jen’s work is collected nationally and internationally. She was the 2019 Featured Artist for the Lawrence Arts Center Benefit Art Auction and the 2025 recipient of the Lawrence Phoenix Award, recognizing her long-term contribution to the artistic community. She serves as co-coordinator of Art in the Park, most recently as a coordinator of the Art Spaces Studio Tours event, and her work is included in several permanent collections, including the KU Capitol Federal School of Business, the Mulvane Art Museum, Lawrence Memorial Hospital (Oncology and West Campus), The City of Salina, KS, and the KU Studio 804 Collections.
